Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

A set of dentures is a prosthodontic device that replaces a group of missing teeth. Partial dentures replace a section of several missing teeth, while full dentures replace a complete set of teeth in the upper or lower jaws (or both).

You may need dentures if you have missing teeth due to:

  • Severe decay
  • Age-related wear or tissue loss
  • Bone loss
  • Periodontal disease
  • Trauma or injury

Dentures can protect your oral health and help boost your confidence when you have missing teeth. GoPro Dentistry uses implant-supported dentures to protect against further decay and bone loss, enable you to eat and speak normally, protect your facial symmetry, and restore your youthful smile.

What are implant-supported dentures?

Implant-supported dentures, or overdentures, use dental implant posts attached directly to the jawbone. Implant-supported dentures are removable but more stable than traditional dentures, which can shift and cause further bone loss over time.

Implant-supported dentures use 2-4 dental implant posts to secure your partial or full dentures. Your customized dentures snap on and off these dental posts, which permanently integrate into the jawbone.

You may also choose to make your dentures fixed to avoid the hassle of removing them daily.

What does getting dentures entail?

The process of getting implant-supported dentures takes several visits over a few weeks. The GoPro Dentistry team discusses each phase of your treatment plan with you before they begin. They may also use digital imaging to help you visualize your end results.

As part of your initial visit, the team takes digital X-rays and prepares your mouth for dental implants. In some cases, your prosthodontist may need to remove decayed teeth or treat oral infections before creating your dentures.

They place your dental implants during another visit and set temporary dentures in place. These function like your natural teeth. Once your mouth fully heals, you return for impressions.

To create your customized dentures, GoPro Dentistry uses a digital scanner to take impressions of your mouth. This advanced technology helps avoid the need for messy, goopy molds and ensures a perfect fit. Once your customized implant-supported dentures are ready, you return for fitting and education on how to help your new smile last a lifetime.
