Sleep Apnea Device Q & A

  • What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common condition that impacts as many as 3 million adults in the United States each year. If you have sleep apnea, your breathing may frequently stop for 10 seconds or longer at a time while you sleep.

Irregular breathing leads to low oxygen levels, which can cause significant long-term complications like:

    • Excessive daytime sleepiness
    • Depression or anxiety
    • Higher risk for accident or injury
    • Higher risk for heart disease
    • Headaches or migraines
    • High blood pressure
    • Teeth grinding and dental damage

You are at the highest risk for sleep apnea if you are obese, smoke, or have asthma or diabetes. If you have sleep apnea, a customized sleep apnea device can help protect your long-term health and lower your risk of serious complications.

  • How can a sleep apnea device improve my sleep?

The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA happens when the muscles of your neck and throat relax and block your airway during sleep.

GoPro Dentistry uses the SomnoDent sleep apnea device to help treat people for OSA. This mandibular advancement device works by shifting the lower part of your jaw forward while you sleep, which opens up your airway and prevents soft tissues from obstructing your breathing.

For many people, a customized sleep apnea device helps them avoid surgery or the need to use a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine while sleeping. A sleep apnea device is as simple to use as putting it in your mouth when you go to bed.

  • Do I need a sleep apnea device?

A sleep partner is often the first to notice frequent pauses in breathing, snoring, snorting, choking, or gasping while you sleep. If you or your partner suspects you have sleep apnea, GoPro Dentistry provides a sleep study referral for an accurate diagnosis.

You may have sleep apnea or benefit from a sleep apnea device if you have symptoms of OSA, including:

    • Chronic fatigue
    • Difficulty concentrating
    • Frequent wakeups
    • Headaches when you wake up
    • Night sweats
    • Waking with a dry mouth or sore throat

If you have sleep apnea, you may also notice daytime irritability, sleepiness, or mood changes.

If a sleep apnea device is recommended for you, the GoPro Dentistry team takes digital impressions of your mouth and works with SomnoMed to create your customized device. You return to the office for fitting and instructions on the long-term care of your SomnoDent device.
